Man, this song sounds familiar. That was my first thought after listening to this LP by the Williams Brothers that I found last weekend while record shopping.
Wait. I remember now.
But wait another minute, where else have I heard that song? Of course…
So, here seems to the be timeline that I can piece together…
- Sam & Dave – 1968
- The Sensational Williams Brothers – 1977
- ZZ Top – 1979
Chances are the Williams Brothers borrowed heavily from Sam & Dave’s version to make a gospel song of the same feeling. ZZ Top just straight up covered the original song.
Obvious influences aside, I love listening to the Williams Brothers’ gospel version.
