One of my favorite newsletters is from James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, a book I read twice (!) in 2020.
This week’s newsletter contained the following quote:
“Things that keep talented people from fulfilling their potential:
– Trying to please everyone
– Imitating the desires of others
– Chasing status without questioning why
– Playing superhero and trying to do it all alone
– Dividing your attention between too many projects” (emphasis mine)
The last point about dividing my attention between too many projects is why I’m a distracted seven.
My goal for 2021 is to be less distracted and put all of my energy (outside of my day job) into building my Discogs store. Not only do I own too many records, but I still have a collection I bought last year that I need to finish selling.
I don’t consider this a side hustle because I enjoy it too much to make it feel like work. It’s a great way to be finance being a record collector by thinning the herd and adding new items when necessary. I can sell records to buy new ones and not use any money from the family budget.
But last year I used the little time I have outside of my busy day job and divided it up between trying to repair vintage audio, running two stores on eBay and Etsy and selling records on Discogs. My time was too divided between all of these “hustles” to see the potential in just one as James mentions above.
So 2021 will be the year of building the Discogs store and seeing what happens. Build the store. I like that. It’s short, sweet and simple, yet could generate great results.
Excel at my day job. Build the store.
