I have tickets to see Archers of Loaf in Nashville on March 7th and I’ve been diving back into their catalog in preparation.
One song that’s always jumped out at me is Might, from the 1993 album Icky Mettle. I’d like to pretend that in 1993 I was hip enough to be an Archers fan, but the reality is I was still swimming in the popular grunge/alternative bands of the time and hadn’t yet made into the more independent side of things. Therefore I fell in love with the band in the early 2000s after they had gone on something of a hiatus.
But if I had listened to them in 1993, this song in particular would have resonated with my frustrated teenage self, featuring lyrics like, “With all of my might, with all of my might I do this, it’s a waste of my time to pursue this…”. In fact, I’ve had plenty of mid-life experiences that ended with the same frustration that appears in this song and therefore resulted in a few repeat listens while driving home from work.
Long story short, it’s a great sing-a-long tune that helps take the edge off after a long temperamental day.
I hope they play it in March.
